Whips & Chains
THE PROJECT
Whips and Chains is a photographic art project focused on struggles faced by the black community in the U.S.-- what is done to black people by other communities, and what is done to the black community by black people.
The final series will include 25 staged photographs, and will be completed in phases. Each photograph will capture a carefully constructed tableaux-- complete with set, costuming, actors, lighting, and so on, making the process similar to film production.
The visual style is influenced by Baroque and High Renaissance painting, as well as photographers such as Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall and Hank Willis Thomas.
WHAT WE NEED
For these initial photos we have reduced the total cost by 60 percent by finding volunteer services and donated space. Our remaining expenses are equipment and gear, costuming, film, food for the crew, and printing, totaling approximately $1,000 per image.
GOING FORWARD
We plan to shoot, edit, and finalize these first two photographs in Summer of 2015, and then we will share the photographs with our generous donors in an exclusive preview event (see rewards for details).
By investing in these two photographs, you are helping us lay the foundation for this exciting series. We will use these photographs as part of an upcoming grant application, and to inspire future contributors.
Your contribution will go a long way to ensuring this phase of the project is completed.
